 about the meta-search
This tool searches online sources that
- are localized, so they contain data for a specific region
(exceptions are FamilySearch and
 GensData,
which are searched for matches anywhere in the Netherlands)
- are searchable but not indexable: they don't consist of flat HTML pages indexed by regular search engines such as Google
For the Netherlands, more and more of such sources are becoming available: a lot of archives are using a system
called ISIS to make their databases public. The other major
engine, 'Digitale Stamboom', was developed by Valoris.
The meta-search determines which databases may
contain data relevant to your query and queries them for you. If there are matches, only the first three are shown since
the purpose of this script is only to locate the relevant databases, not replace them.
To search, specify at least a last name to search for, as well as a search period. You can set the region to be searched by
clicking on the map. You can change the search radius to cover either a small or wide area. Choosing a wider area usually means more databases
must be queried so it will be slower.
The shallow and deep search options are currently inactive.

Voor Nederland komen we steeds meer van dit soort bronnen beschikbaar: veel archieven gebruiken het
ISIS-systeem om hun gegevens beschikbaar
te stellen. Het andere veelgebruikte systeem, 'Digitale Stamboom', is ontwikkeld door
Valoris.
De meta-zoek bepaalt zelf welke webbronnen gegevens zouden kunnen bevatten die relevant zijn voor je zoekopdracht
en doorzoekt ze voor je. Als er treffers gevonden worden, worden alleen de eerste drie hier op de site
getoond, aangezien het doel van het programma is om relevante webbronnen op te sporen, niet om ze te vervangen.
Om te zoeken moet je minimaal een achternaam opgeven en - door op de kaart te klikken - een zoekregio, .
Je kunt het zoekgebied groot of klein instellen. Als je een groot gebied doorzoekt kost dat meestal wel meer
tijd omdat er meer bronnen moeten worden bevraagd.
